Bathroom Side Table

My bathroom is somewhat small and I’ve always been a bit frustrated by the sink placement. There isn’t quite enough space between the sink and the wall for a standard sized table, and there’s a bit too much space for a shelf. Additionally, the sink tapers in at the front meaning the gap isn’t rectangular shaped.

So decided to make a custom table to fit snugly into that otherwise wasted space. The design was inspired by the daybed I previously built. I used a cardboard template to reproduce the exact shape of the gap, then cut the top piece to that template. The lower shelf is used to hold a big basket and keep it off the floor. As well the lower frame helps keep the whole piece more rigid.

I ended up staining the top a darker shade to give a bit more contrast, but left the lower frame it’s natural colour. The whole piece was finished with several coats of water-based polyurethane.

The scrap lumber that went into making the side table

I’m very happy with how this piece turned out. I’m especially pleased with how I was able to turn a pile of low-quality scrap lumber into a functional side table.
